I
have noticed in the guestbook a few entries recently
asking for help tracing relatives. Would anyone seeking
this type of information please ensure they leave a
contact email address otherwise there's no way people
can pass on any details they may have. If you don't
want to leave an email address in the guestbook thats
fine, just send an email to this website with your contact
details and any information received will be forwarded
on.
It's taken a while to put together due to work commitments
but I'm pleased to report a fabulous addition to the
website.
The
family of Donavon Smith have very kindly sent scans
of Don's WW2 logbook and also his photo album. The logbook
presents us with a fascinating insight into a fighter
pilot's tour (in this case two combat tours) and is
an important historical document which makes for captivating
reading.
The
photo album contains almost 350 photographs, the vast
majority of which have never been seen before, and like
the logbook it reveals many previously unknown details
which will appeal to historians, students and modellers
of the 56th. Our thanks to the Smiths for their kindness
and generosity. (The margaritas are on me, guys! )
The
list of photographs required to complete a pictorial
record of 56th pilots now stands at 11 with Bob Winters
sending in a photograph of his 62nd FS colleague Albert
Tevels. The outstanding pilots list is now...
61st FS
ABAR. Everett.
BLOOM. Robert.
MYERS. Clarence.
SMITH. Judson.
STROUD. William.
62nd
FS
BEELER. Hugh.
WOODWARD. John
63rd
FS
REED. Richard.
SCHREIBER. Walter.
TATE. William.
VEST. Boss.
If
you can help with any of these please CONTACT
US.
Photographs
continue to arrive and I will be sorting through these
and posting them in the relevant photo albums. I am
very excited to report that we have received scans of
another photo album which contains a large amount of
high quality photographs and this will be uploaded onto
the website in due course. Again, the vast majority
of the photographs have never been seen outside of the
album.
Naturally,
if anyone else would like to donate scans of similar
items we would love to hear from you! There's lots of
space on the website.
As
with all photographs and media footage that is received
by this website, copies are being made and passed onto
the 56th Fighter Group museum at Halesworth.
If
you have any items you would like to donate to the museum
that it isn't possible to display on the website these
can be sent to the museum directly. Buzz Took, as many
of you will know, is the American Liaison at the museum
and can be contacted either via the 56th FG website
web@56thfightergroup.co.uk
or directly at buzztook.56thfguk@btinternet.com
Once
again, thank you everybody for your support and encouragement.
I
hope you enjoy the latest additions to the 56th Fighter
Group website.
Until
next time..... Cave Tonitrum!
